Tata Nano versus Maruti Alto K-10


Tata Nano is an excellent small car in the A segment and brings many good features. It has been considered as an engineering marvel for a car that offers a lot in an excellent package as the Nano. Maruti Alto K-10 is the new and improved version of the Alto and brings many good features at exciting pricing. We compare the Tata Nano with the Maruti Alto K-10 hatchback to find out how they fare against each other in our car comparison.

Looks and design:
Tata Nano is known for its contemporary looks and exciting exteriors which has been well designed and looks modern and stylish. It has many good features and has been a popular car amongst the youth looking for a small car. It has cute headlamps and taillights. It has ample ground clearance and wheelbase. It has sporty looking front end design and the build quality is acceptable.
Maruti Alto K-10 has been designed very well and brings stylish front end design with well designed headlamps and taillights and body colored bumper with fog lamps. It has some similarities with the older Alto and appeals to a variety of customers. It has improved build quality compared to some of its other rivals in the segment. It is a good looking car and Maruti has done a good job with the build quality on the Alto K-10.

Interiors – design, space and features:
Tata Nano has ample leg and head room inside and the interiors are built to cost however it has ample space and the cabin feels spacious and airy owing to large windows which give the interiors a fresh feeling. The seats provide ample comfort to the driver and passenger. It has a powerful air conditioning unit which cools the car quickly. There is no boot for storage however it comes with a MP3/CD player.
Maruti Alto K-10 has moderately good quality interiors in a car in this price range and has blue colored seat covers which add to the quality feel inside this A-segment car. It has a functional yet elegant dashboard and a powerful aircon. It has an instrument panel with MID and the seats provide ample comfort to the back. It has a spacious cabin area and the boot space is sufficient for carrying small travel luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:
Tata Nano has ample performance from its engine and brings good performance in the city and on the highway. It brings a 624cc two cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox and produces 33 BHP at 5250 RPM and max torque of 48 NM between 2500 to 3000 RPM. It has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 23.65 kmpl. There is ample power to pull a full load inside the car.
Maruti Alto K-10 brings a powerful K-series engine which produces 67 BHP at 6200 RPM and 90 NM of torque at 3500 RPM. It has been certified by ARAI to deliver a fuel efficiency of 20.2 kmpl. The engine has very good drivability and unlike the older Alto it does not feel underpowered with the air conditioning turned on and provides an exciting driving experience owing to its peppy engine performance.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:
Tata Nano is a very comfortable car to drive and offers a good driving experience for a car in this price range. It has comfortable ride quality owing to the well sorted suspension setup on the car. It also brings high ground clearance which is required to go over bad and potholed roads in the country. The steering unit is a manual unit and heavy at low speeds but is well weighted at higher speeds.
Maruti Alto K-10 is a very good car and with good road manners. The steering on the Alto K-10 is vague and does not offer good feedback to the driver. It has good suspension setup which offers good handling capabilities while negotiating traffic in the city or during highway runs. It has powerful brakes with sufficient  bite and provides adequate performance. It is capable of handling triple digit speeds.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:

Tata has priced its Tata Nano hatchback from (ex-showroom Delhi) price of 1.27 lakhs for the Tata Nano Std BSIII, Tata Nano Std BSIV is priced at 1.41 lakhs, Tata Nano CX BSIII is priced at 1.52 lakhs, Tata Nano CX BS IV is priced at 1.70 lakhs, Tata Nano LX BSIII is priced at 1.77 lakhs and the top variant Tata Nano LX BS IV is priced at 1.97 lakhs. The pricing is value for money for Tata Nano.

Maruti Alto K-10 has been priced (ex-showroom Delhi) from 3.14 lakhs for the base Maruti Alto K-10 LXI and 3.27 lakhs for the top feature packed variant Maruti Alto K-10 VXI. The pricing is very good for a car with many features such as the Maruti Alto K-10. It has good performance and fuel efficiency and is a very reliable car with excellent service backup courtesy Maruti Suzuki in India.

Verdict:

Tata Nano is a very good car and brings many features at very affordable pricing. It has all the basic features seen in other cars and is a safe to drive car. It has good handling and suspension for the price. Maruti Alto K-10 has excellent service backup owing to Maruti’s large network of service centers spread throughout the country. It has low cost of ownership and is a very reliable car.
